It was a very windy day at American Canyon in August. It is just south of Napa California. I attended an Audubon bird group’s birdwatching tour. A few people who attended the tour brought some top-notch tools for viewing birds: SPOTTING SCOPES!
Looking through the scopes was an interesting experience. The high magnification allowed us to see birds several hundred meters away. They were a little big and bulky since they were mounted an tripods, but it was worth it. They are also better suited for stationary or slowly moving birds.
I’ll stick with my binoculars and camera for now, but I’m definitely thinking about getting a scope in the future.
Here are birds I saw there:

American Kestrel

Barn Swallow

American Avocet

Song Sparrow

Herring Gull

Greater Yellowlegs? Lesser Yellowlegs?

Kildeer

Anna’s Hummingbird

Red-winged Blackbird

Canada Goose

Black-necked Stilts have pink legs

Semipalmated Sandpiper

Black-crowned night heron’s parent and juvenile.
